The laughter from below floated up the stairs, as I descended. The living room was chaotic, with people talking in loud voices, children running from one corner of the room to another, sometimes dangerously close to the flower vases, and the fragile items of decorations that dotted the space for the upcoming wedding.

And as I stood in the middle of the chaos, she entered.

Almost floating through the entrance, an entourage of people behind her, suddenly cramping the already crowded living hall of my four-bedroom suburban house.

I remember vividly how I felt when I looked at her. It was a concoction of emotions, some of which were right on the surface, but some I failed to notice in the moment, but in hindsight, they were always there.

The strongest of them all was shock.

Shock at how pretty she was, with her tall legs, an angelic face, beautiful brown hair, and a jawline that could stand out amongst a million more.

But I was most shocked at how similar she looked to Vivian, the former love of my life, and why wouldn't she, given that she was her daughter, and my daughter’s best friend.

She glided across the room, and enveloped my daughter in a tight hug, as I just stood fixed to the spot, the noises of the living room melting into nothingness, as she took the spotlight, glowing amongst things of far less importance.

I saw her get into a lively discussion with my daughter, Sophia.

I saw her gently rub the side of her arm, and then hug her once again, all the while apologizing for being absent from her life, just as her mother had been from mine.

Yes, this was surely Vivian’s daughter.

She had the same smile, the same dimples that appeared on the sides of her mouth every time she laughed. But there was a distinct difference that stood out. Vivian’s daughter was taller than her mother, and had a more athletic frame than the more voluptuous mother, and also, she had an uncanny resemblance to Kendall Jenner, but I only knew that because Sophia would scream at the TV any time her friend would appear on the screen, singing, gyrating to one of her widely popular pop hits, and say ‘I still can't believe how much she resembles Kendall’, after which I would ask her for the 100th time who Kendall was, and she would show me a picture of the supermodel, and I would feel a mini earthquake in my vagina each time I would lay my eyes on her.

And that is what happened this time, when I laid my eyes on Daisy Jones, the beautiful daughter of Vivian Jones, who once had my heart, and then shattered it into a million pieces when she disappeared from my life, and her daughter’s without a warning.

My train of thoughts came to an abrupt halt when I realized Daisy and Sophia were walking towards me.

I took a deep breath, tried to steady myself, and stood up straight, as if I was readying myself to walk down the aisle for my own marriage.
